Kidney problems are conditions that occur when the kidneys are damaged and can't filter blood properly. Kidney problems can range from acute kidney injury to chronic kidney disease, which can lead to kidney failure.
Types of kidney problems
Acute kidney injury
A sudden kidney problem that can be caused by an injury. It can lead to permanent kidney damage or end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
A gradual loss of kidney function that can be caused by high blood pressure or diabetes. CKD can lead to kidney failure.
End-stage renal disease (ESRD)
Symptoms of kidney problems
Swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet
Itchy or dry skin
Feeling tired
Headaches
Nausea and vomiting
Shortness of breath
Muscle cramps or weakness
Urinating less often
Trouble concentrating
